Age at the time of application – the age of the applicant when they applied.

Application status

  • Initial assessment - the first check of the application to see if it meets the criteria.
  • Investigation - when we are actively gathering and analysing information.
  • Reviewed and completed - applications that have been finished, either referred, closed (including any that have been withdrawn).

Average received per month - Mean average of new applications received in a month.

Case age from time of conviction to present – how long it has been since the conviction.

Closed applications - cases we have finished considering. This could be because they didn’t meet the criteria, were withdrawn, or we completed our review.

Completed appeals – whether the applicant has concluded all court appeal options.

Convicted with others – whether the person was convicted alone or with co-defendants.

In prison - whether that applicant was in prison at the time of applying.

Offence type – the main offence for which the applicant was convicted (e.g. violence, dishonesty, drugs).

Reason for completion of application review – the main reason the case was closed.

Referred applications - cases we have sent to the Court of Appeal or High Court because we found a possible miscarriage of justice.

Sentence review only – applicants that only ask us to look at their sentence, not the conviction.

Total applications - the number of applications Te Kāhui has received since we were established in 2020
