Te Kāhui Tātari Ture | Criminal Cases Review Commission (Te Kāhuihas referred the sentence of Douglas Roy Andrews to the Court of Appeal.

The referral relates to sentence only. Mr Andrews’ convictions are not part of this referral.

Mr Andrews was convicted of sexual offending and is currently serving a sentence of 11 years and six months’ imprisonment. His convictions and sentence have previously been considered by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Te Kāhui decided it is in the interests of justice for the Court to reconsider the sentence in light of new psychological evidence that was not available at the time of sentencing. This information includes diagnosed conditions and related material that may be relevant to the sentencing.

Te Kāhui’s role is to assess whether there is new information that may be relevant to a conviction or sentence. In this case, we have identified information that was not available at the time of sentencing, and it is appropriate for the Court of Appeal to consider it,” Kaikōmihana Matua Tuarua | Deputy Chief Commissioner, Paula Rose said.
